Now it's time to start flinging some fish! We all started tossing the frozen salmon, and the snipped off tails, into the Mashel River. The reason we toss salmon into the river is to put back vital nutrients into the river system. Historically, large salmon runs would return to these rivers and after spawning the salmon would die in large numbers. Scientists have shown that the nutrients from these salmon can be found in all of the living organisms in and around the river. The nutrients are found in the insects and fish within the river, in the plants and trees surrounding the streams and in the larger animals that live nearby. The loss of these nutrients affects the entire ecosystem, so we're helping to put those nutrients back into the system. |
