There are a number of programs and projects within the Nisqually Watershed that have been established to meet the goals and objectives outlined in the Nisqually River Management Plan.
The Nisqually River Basin Land Trust was established in 1989 as a non-profit group of farmers, business and professional people, homemakers and others. Together, they are working to protect the Nisqually River basin through private, non-governmental means.
The Nisqually River Interpretive Center Foundation was established in the early 1990's to plan, develop and operate the Nisqually River Interpretive Center, a state and regional watershed interpretive facility.
The Nisqually River Education Project is a watershed education program with the principal mission of implementing key elements of the Nisqually River Management Plan. The NREP is based at the Yelm School District but works with teachers and students from throughout the entire watershed.
The Nisqually Stream Stewards are people living in the Nisqually watershed who help to protect and improve the health of the streams and rivers within the watershed. They hold many community cleanup and restoration events throughout the watershed.
The Nisqually Glacier to Sound Conservation Corridor will serve as a model for how landowners and communities can link “islands of protected habitat” (such as parks and refuges) and can conserve watersheds through community developed, voluntary initiatives, rather than through regulation and “locking up” the land.
