The Nisqually River Council

The Nisqually River Management Plan is implemented through a "Nisqually River Council" which includes representation of certain non-governmental river interests.

The Nisqually River Council is a coordination, advocacy and educational organization with no independent authority. The Council seeks to integrate the history, culture, environment and economy of the watershed. A separate "Nisqually River Citizens Advisory Committee" was also created to assure citizen representation during implementation of the Nisqually River Management Plan.

As implementation of the Nisqually River Management Plan progresses, certain plan elements may be addressed through acts of the participating agencies, the advisory committee, or other entities such as an optional 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Nisqually River Council Meetings

The Nisqually River Council meets on the third Friday of each month at various locations throughout the watershed (see Happenings for locations). Members of the public are welcome to attend.

The Nisqually River Management Plan

The Nisqually River Management Plan and Final EIS (environmental impact statement) represent over a year and a half of work by the Nisqually River Task Force and project staff.

The preparation of a Nisqually River Management Plan by the Department of Ecology was mandated by the 1985 state legislature by SHB 323.
